Ten years after Volkswagen hinted at a return of the iconic Microbus, only to cancel the project, it's ready to try again.
A new Microbus concept--with an electric drivetrain and seating for six--makes its debut at the Geneva motor show.
VW says this Microbus--known as the Bulli in Europe--has a range of 186 miles on its 40-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack is sandwiched in the floor of the van and could be recharged in less than an hour, VW says, at an "electric refueling station" designed for EVs.

Unlike the original Microbus, the concept's electric motor is positioned in front of the vehicle and drives the front wheels. The 114-hp motor delivers 199 lb-ft of torque. VW says the concept would run from 0 to 62 mph in 11.5 seconds. Top speed is limited to 87 mph.
The engine compartment could also hold a small gasoline or diesel engine, VW says.

The concept makes use of heritage design cues, starting with a large, round, chrome VW emblem on its nose.

Design legend Giorgetto Giugiaro has styled a hybrid coupe and an electric minivan for Volkswagen that preview possible greener models for Europe's biggest automaker.
Giugiaro's Italdesign company unveiled the Tex plug-in hybrid-electric coupe and the Go electric medium minivan at the Geneva auto show.
Both vehicles are underpinned by VW's new MQB modular transverse platform architecture that debuts next year on the new Audi A3.
"Italdesign is a creative center for fresh ideas and its integration in the Group is a building block in our effort to take Volkswagen to the top of the automotive industry by 2018," VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn said in a statement.
Last spring, VW group bought a 90 percent stake in Italdesign to add more design and engineering capacity as the company strives to topple Toyota Motors Corp. as the world's No. 1 automaker.

With a flurry of Italian metal display, the Swedes have had to think of ways to grab attention of show-goers and they surely ain’t holding anything back.

Dubbed the Agera R, will feature a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with a gut wrenching 1,115 bhp and 885 torques that would have the Italian exotics for breakfast. The 7-Speed dual-clutch transmission will haul this heap of carbon fibre upwards of 250 mph.

Rolls-Royce Reveals Electric Phantom

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars released a photo of the 102EX, an electric-powered version of its Phantom ultra-luxury sedan that the company plans to unveil during the Geneva Motor Show today at 10 a.m. ET.
The car, also known as the Phantom Experimental Electric or EE, is meant to test not only the feasibility of battery power for an outsize luxury car, but to help gauge potential acceptance of electric cars among longtime customers and potential new buyers.

The test car will go on an international tour during which customers, car enthusiasts, auto writers and others will get a chance to drive it and share their opinions with the company.

Rolls-Royce, which is a unit of BMW AG, says the information it gathers during test drives and in discussions will help guide its strategy for potentially developing alternative drive systems for its vehicles.

In recent years, Barrett-Jackson has become a Mecca for beautifully restored pickup trucks, and the 2011 40th anniversary collector-car auction is no exception.

These one-time workhorses have now taken their places besides the rich array of sports cars, muscle cars and ’50s cruisers, many of them brought back to better-than original condition with lavish paint jobs and like-new interiors. They’re admired for their nostalgic forms as well as the artistic touches of the original designers who wanted to make their trucks stand out.

Pickups have long been the subjects of hot-rod treatments, but nowadays, they’re more likely to be seen at Barrett-Jackson as handsome originals and usable collector’s items. They’re bringing good money, too, over $30,000 on a regular basis. More for exceptional models and restorations.

There are about 125 pickup trucks of various kinds at Barrett-Jackson, ranging from Chevy El Caminos and high-performance street rods to Volkswagen single- and double-cab models and such oddities as a custom Cadillac pickup.

Many of the pickup restorers show deep respect for the original workings and sometimes puny engines in these working-man vehicles, while others add some facets that keep the original hardware but add modern comfort and drivability features.

Subaru Rally Team USA unveiled its new 2011 Impreza WRX STI rally cars to journalists in dramatic fashion at the Pala Raceway in Pala, California. The team provided full speed ride-alongs to journalists during practice for the ESPN Summer X Games 16. Travis Pastrana, Dave Mirra and new teammate, European Rallycross Champion Sverre Isachsen, demonstrated that they were ready for the SuperRally X Game competitions, being held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on Saturday, July 31st.

"The team has worked very hard to get these vehicles ready for the X Games," said Pastrana. "The competition is going to be tough but I am confident that our STIs will be the cars to beat."

The team's technical partner, Vermont SportsCar, first began with a stock 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI right off the showroom floor. The car's interior was then stripped bare and the shell lightened then fully seam welded for added strength. A multipoint roll cage, manufactured from T45 steel, was then welded into place.

Traffic Stopper? Concept Car Converts From Road to Air

The Jetsons made us all believe that flying cars were the future of commuting, and in truth we’ve had the technology to create flying cars for quite some time now. They haven’t taken off, so to speak, for a number of reasons – most notably that air traffic control capabilities might be overwhelmed by a large number of personal aircraft flying around. With computerized air traffic control taking over, flying car ideas are again gaining traction.

This design is known simply as the YEE. It’s meant to be a futuristic mode of transportation that embodies the best of the flying car ideal. Designed by Pan Jiazhi, Zhu Wenxi and Lai Zexin, the concept car took the gold medal for Best Creative Future in the 2010 International Concept Car Design Contest.

The YEE is geared toward single people or small families living in the suburbs who may face an unpleasant commute every morning. The vehicle would be able to get them to their destination quickly and pleasantly while avoiding the downtown traffic. But the car could be used for running errands around the neighborhood as well, because in its road mode it operates just like a regular car. When it’s ready to fly, the back wheels actually extend to become rear propellers.

The project information doesn’t mention how the transition from road vehicle to air vehicle is handled; the wings and propellers are used to propel and stabilize the vehicle when it’s driving on the road, so extending them before takeoff wouldn’t be possible. Of course, the design is only a concept at this point so it’s not worth tearing apart every one of its aspects. If the YEE ever goes into production those questions will have to be answered, but for now it’s an interesting and fun bit of futuristic car eye candy.

Toyota Etios To Roll Out Early 2011

Toyota announced that its compact small car, the Etios, will be ready to hit the road early 2011. Toyota is all set to start production from its new plant in Bidadi, which is about 40 km from its existing plant near Bangalore. The new plant will be fully functional by this year end, enabling Toyota to roll out the Etios by early next year. The new plant will have a production capacity of 1,00,000 cars per annum.

The Etios will be available in both hatch and sedan variants and will be powered by 1.2 litres and 1.5 litres petrol engines respectively. There is no news of a diesel variant yet.

Bugatti Veyron now selling at 17.5 crore Rupees in INDIA

Exclusive Motors (New Delhi), Lamborghini and Bentley’s exclusive dealer in India, has finally brought Bugatti Veyron in our land. This baby is equipped with an 8.0 liter W16 quad-turbocharged 1,001 hp engine mated to a 7-speed DSG gearbox; the word ‘acceleration’ would be an understatement for its 2.5 second 0-100 kmph sprint.

The Bugatti Veyron is said to cost between 16 to 17.5 crore Rupees including all taxes and duties. Soon two more Bugattis would be delivered to a South Indian business magnate. The first Veyron, according to sources, has already been delivered to a Mumbai based real estate tycoon.

Bugatti Veyron was designed & developed by the Volkswagen Group and produced by Bugatti Automobiles SAS at their headquarters in Château St. Jean in Molsheim, Alsace, France. The car is named after French racing driver Pierre Veyron, and it was BBC: Top Gear’s “Car Of The Decade” for 2000 to 2009.

General Motors thinks it can finally sell a good small car.

The company, which has a past littered with compact wrecks like the unsafe Corvair and rusty Vega, will roll out the Chevrolet Cruze in September — betting it can attract younger drivers and succeed in the most competitive segment of the worldwide auto market.

GM owners may know that "nothing works like a Chevy truck," but the little Cruze is a big gamble.

"They can't afford to get it wrong," said Michael Robinet, an automotive analyst with CSM Worldwide in Michigan.

The Cruze follows another GM small-car flop, the Chevy Cobalt, which failed because it looks dated, is noisy, has a chintzy hard-plastic interior and doesn't perform as well as competitors. Americans bought just 105,000 last year, compared with about three times as many Toyota Corollas.

GM must also overcome history. Dating to the Corvair in the 1960s, its executives viewed small cars as money-losers because of low prices, high U.S. labor costs and American drivers' hunger for cheap gas and larger vehicles.

"They really haven't spent any time or money on these vehicles," said David Champion, senior director of Consumer Reports' auto testing department. The Cobalt, introduced in 2004, "came out trying to be competitive in that market but always languished behind."

That has to change if the Cruze is to help save GM.

Now in its sixth generation, the 2011 Jetta is no longer merely a Golf hatchback with the addition of a trunk. That’s how the model began life in 1979, and while the previous generation offered unique styling details and the largest trunk in its class by a country mile, the new one only shares some architectural underpinnings, meaning no similar stampings, just components.

The 2011 Jetta gets a longer wheelbase than the Golf and the outgoing Jetta, making it a true midsize competitor. Its overall length is extended 89 mm (3.5 inches) to 4,640 mm (182.7 inches), while it also measures 1,450 mm (57.1 inches) tall and 1,780 mm (70.1 inches) wide, resulting in 66 mm (2.6 inches) greater legroom over the outgoing model at 968 mm (38.1 inches).

Like Volkswagen upped the interior ante with the new Golf, the 2011 Jetta improvements go beyond capacity. Upgraded materials will give owners an even more premium-like experience than the well-appointed outgoing Jetta, starting with the most critical human-machine interface, the steering wheel. VW says that it will “impress both visually and to the touch,” which is a reasonable expectation as the previous model’s wheel did likewise. Just the same, it’s odd to see switchgear on the left spoke and not on the right. Just the same, all controls remain intuitively placed for optimal ergonomics and there are absolutely no surprises when it comes to its understated, clean, Teutonic design, highlighted by traditional circular primary dials for speed and tachometer, divided by the multifunction display as always. Fabric and leather trimmed cabins will be on the menu, as well as navigation, Bluetooth cell phone and audio connectivity, and other entertainment device connectivity solutions too.

As part of an extended teaser campaign, the first official details have begun to emerge on the redesigned 2012 BMW X3, following a media test-drive of camouflaged preproduction prototypes in Germany. The production version will make its public debut this fall at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

The second-generation X3, which goes on sale early next year in North America, is larger and roomier than its predecessor. It will be offered in the U.S. initially in two variants, a 268-horsepower X3 xDrive28i and, later in the year, a range-topping X3 xDrive35i powered by a twin-turbocharged 302-hp 3.0-liter inline-6.

The new X3 will feature standard four-wheel drive and both engines will be equipped with the new ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Eventually, BMW plans to add diesel and hybrid variants.

Production is shifting from the Magna-Steyr plant in Graz, Austria, to BMW's facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

BMW Korea, the local sales representative of German automaker BMW AG, began selling a new luxury sedan, the Gran Turismo Exclusive, in South Korea Tuesday, the latest of its 5 series models that is expected to help secure its post as the top-selling imported brand in the country.

The new vehicle emphasizes passenger comfort with legroom and a headrest that will allow passengers, as well as the driver, to have the experience of a "first-class" flight, BMW Korea said.

Japanese tuner 3D Design has come out with some new aero bits for owners of the E89 Z4. The Japanese tuner is offering a pretty impressive package for the new BMW Z4 Roadster, even if their only focus is on improving the exterior.

The package includes a new front lip spoiler and a trunk spoiler both made of urethane and a rear diffuser made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The Z4 is audibly improved with the use of 4-tip exhaust.

The new Z4 also features a spectacular set of wheels that hit this car, with a nice silver touch to contrast the black of the car, the wheel and, of course, the tires.

There aren't many options on the color scheme as the car is only available in an impressive black exterior color, making this vehicle look as if it was made for a man's man.

The car is only limited to an exterior package so it's not exactly game on for street racing, because of the lack of turbo boost.

BMW’s Hybrid Future May Include 3 Series

BMW was initially slow to build hybrid cars, but now it is turning just about everything into a hybrid. In a speech to shareholders on Tuesday in Munich, Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the BMW AG board of management, not only confirmed the rumored production version of the 5 Series ActiveHybrid concept, but also said a 3 Series hybrid is likely coming, too.

The gas-electric 5 Series could be on road next year, Mr. Reithofer said, and he added that the company was “anticipating the hybridization” of other models, “such as the BMW 3 Series.” He said that BMW would choose “the most suitable hybrid solution for the respective model.”

The ActiveHybrid 7 is already on the market, and these two new models would give BMW a full range of eco-cars. Mr. Reithofer’s speech touched on a number of green themes, including an initial $100 million investment in a joint venture based in the United States with SGL Carbon to provide lightweight carbon-fiber parts for future production cars. And he talked about the battery electrics BMW has been testing. “Our global field test with the Mini E is a great success,” he said. “Many enthusiastic customers for e-mobility already exist today.”

The new model has front, side and rear under spoilers in lieu of black body trim and front and rear skid plates and completes its sporting stance with a roof spoiler, rear privacy glass and deletion of roof rails.

The SX4 1.6DDiS – diesel engine is also improved by lowering its emissions with 10g/km to 129g/km and a 10 per cent of combined fuel consumption cycle, now it is 57.6 mpg.

The Aerio version is available in only 500 units, for now.

Nissan has nominated Hawaii to be one of its initial launch markets in the U.S. for 2011. The Japanese auto manufacturer and the State of Hawaii are working on a partnership aimed to promote the development and expanding of an electric vehicle network. Thanks to this co-operation, the brand will make its highly anticipated all-electric, eco-friendly Nissan LEAF available to Hawaiian buyers.

The eco ride has been already price tagged with MSRP of $32,780. With fully eligible federal tax credit of $7,500, the Nissan LEAF’s lease price will begin at $349 per month.

Boasting a fuel cost of 5 cents per mile, the Interest in the LEAF is so high that Nissan began accepting reservations earlier this month. In the U.S., more than 8,200 people have reserved a Nissan LEAF.

Honda CR-V was a steady performer which never took the market by storm, but it also never failed to sell. It sold because of its attributes – easy to park, roomy, reliable and well built.

Each successive generation has grown larger, and less square, but also more comfortable. And it continues to sell steadily. With just over a six per cent market share for the compact SUV segment (selling over 700 last month alone), it’s certainly not a car which attracts the masses, so is it lost in the highly competitive marketplace we see surrounding us? A week behind the wheel and we have the answers.

Let’s be honest here – it’s not the prettiest car ever made. But it’s an SUV, and by nature, their proportions are all wrong. You can see what Honda has tried to do. It’s attempted to round off the square edges of the two-box design, typical of softroaders. But if you round off a little too much…well, let’s just say the result is less than complimentary.

The front double-grille doesn’t help matters, and coupled with the slanted chin, it looks awkward from the front. The side profile is much better, however the nearly arc-like shape of the glasshouse gives the D-pillar a thickness that contributes to reduced visibility. The rear is inoffensive; there’s no edginess pushing the boundaries of design, though. It plays the design card pretty safely, then.

So it’s a good thing that you’ll be spending most of your time behind the wheel, and not looking at it from the outside, because it’s behind the wheel that the CR-V shows what it’s really made of.

We’ve all heard the marketing gurus for car companies deliver us spin in spades – it’s roomier than the QE2, it has an interior to rival the Burj Al Arab, it exudes passion, it sips like a bird, etc. But if the brief to the designers was to make the CR-V feel like it was a normal passenger car, and not an SUV, then they’ve completed their mission.

Is it real? Is it ever. Porsche is expanding its portfolio (now the largest the company has ever offered) and, yes, they keep hinting that the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid will become a reality, too.

What they said: “The challenge was to come up with a new system that was credible,” explained Detlev von Platen, chief executive of Porsche Cars North America. In other words, the company recognized that simply tacking on an electric motor to a high-performance car would draw the same kind of derision some early luxury hybrids received. Mr. Platen noted that the hybrid is lighter (by 400 pounds) yet includes an added 150 pounds of safety related equipment (not to mention the added weight of the battery under the back end). The car is 40 percent more fuel efficient than today’s Cayenne S.

The car will go from a standing start up to 35 miles per hour before seeking help from the gas engine. However, by decoupling the engine from the electric motor via a nifty new transmission, the Cayenne S Hybrid allows drivers to switch off the gas engine and run on pure electricity while cruising down the highway, er, autobahn at up to 97 miles per hour. Given the almost total absence of engine noise in such a situation, Porsche engineers call it “sailing.” We’d call it an adrenaline rush.

It appears that Audi wanted this flagship to carry everything possible into the battles for sales. What they created was an extremely luxurious SUV that weighs nearly three tons and yet sips diesel fuel and provides potent acceleration thanks to a V6 diesel that creates 225 horsepower and an enormous 406 pound-feet of torque. When the turbocharged engine comes online, around 2000 rpm, the big Audi is breathtakingly fast for what it is, especially considering its bulk. You are also going to find yourself going well over the speed limit during highway merging and passing. This Audi hauls.

We have tested both the gas version and the diesel option and there simply is no question that the extra dollars for the latter is superior is every way. It is quiet, swift, and starts automatically. Audi labels its diesel the cleanest SUV in the world and it is more efficient than the other German competition from Mercedes and Volkswagen as the Q7 has a ULEV-II or ultra-low emission rating.

Driving the large Audi is a pleasant experience, but there is no question this is a very heavy vehicle. Despite this parking was very easy. When making a U turn you are never going to need to worry about having to stop and put this vehicle in reverse. It is a pleasure to park even in tight mall spots and the rearview camera, a must for such a high vehicle with restricted rearward vision, is second only to Nissan’s in clarity. Exceptional.

The exterior look is massive and intimating. The rear lift over is extremely high making loading heavy objects a chore. The rear hatch has an available motorized open and closing motor and you need to have this if you are of average height or shorter. It is quite difficult to close otherwise.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage is one such car. No slouch in the visual department, it's also a rare aural delight. I say this as someone who normally finds little pleasure in hearing an accelerating engine. Most often, and especially late at night outside my house, it inspires only thoughts of the violent revenge I'd like to carry out on the driver of the guilty vehicle.

But I feel sure I could listen to CDs of a speeding V8 the way some insomniacs find comfort in recordings of whale song. It's a deeply soulful sound, like a John Coltrane solo – only played on an alloy camshaft rather than a tenor saxophone.

What's more, it grows sweeter as the revs increase, so you can find yourself flirting with three penalty points while accelerating towards that beckoning siren sound. Alas, "I'm sorry officer, I was beguiled by the music of the engine", is the kind of explanation that soon leads to an exchange with a Breathalyser.

When is an estate car not an estate car? When it's a tourer, of course. There's something 1950s, vaguely cold war and uptight about the concept of an estate, as if it were the sort of vehicle into which one might pack the family and tinned provisions to head to a nuclear bunker. But a "tourer", well, that conjures a more appealing picture, like, say, a leisurely cruise in the Highlands, complete with a hamper of smoked salmon, oysters and champagne, and a harmonious family listening to Radio 3. Or something like that. Still, a tourer is an estate that dare not say its name.

The Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 CDti SE Sports Tourer, to give it its full title, is a car in which one would be very happy to pack a tasty hamper. It's got a capacious rear in which you could probably fit the dining table and chairs, too. I was impressed with the saloon Insignia a year ago. It seemed roomy enough – I transported a cottage-load of stuff in it, after all. Presumably, the tourer is for people with lots of stuff and a labrador, too.

I spent two weeks in two motorized variations on the theme of the wagon. I gained incredible insight. People loved the CTS Sport Wagon for its sharp styling inside and out, its precise road manners, its utility. But the younger they were, the less they liked it. Why? "Because my parents drove a wagon," was the usual response. So what? "I'm not my parents."

I heard that so much, I looked into it. It certainly was true they weren't their parents. But many of them were parents themselves, with young children they needed to cart about. They wanted to do the carting fashionably. Wagons, they said, weren't fashionable. They much preferred the Cadillac SRX4 2.8T, which had marginally better cargo space, but not more power, better road manners or better fuel economy than the CTS Sport Wagon.

What the SRX4 2.8T had, in their estimation, was what it lacked — the absence of anything that identified it as a wagon.

Our test car was equipped with all-wheel drive and the 300 hp turbo V6 and still manages EPA ratings of 15 mpg city (very pessimistic, we averaged 17.5 mpg overall for the week we drove it) and 22 mpg on the highway. While we didn't get the chance to make a pure highway run, our experience with all of the newer cars (introduced in 2008 or later) is that 22 mpg is doable and probably exceedable.

Direct injection is a kick, allowing GM to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy while providing more power. It also has stability control, all speed traction control, four wheel vented disc brakes and not just a limited slip differential, but one that is electronically controlled.

All that and the safety belts comprise the active safety items, and the SRX also has a full complement of passive safety equipment including front and side impact air bags for the driver and front passenger, head curtain side impact air bags front and rear and a tire pressure monitoring system.

We've noted in the past that much of what the auto makers have accomplished in both fuel economy and reduced emissions (which, of course, are interdependent) has been done without the use of particularly advanced technology. Some of it is made more effective through the use of higher technology, such as controlling fuel injection, direct or otherwise, through the use of computers.

Of course, once you have computers on board, you can go nuts. The SRX has a 40-gig hard drive and can use computers for a lot of things, including the navigation system and a kick-tail sound system plus a dual-screen wireless DVD system with wireless headphones so the rear seat passengers can watch two separate DVDs and you won't have to listen to either one of them. Now, that's progress.

Volvo wants to move up from the “near luxury” label with this new version of the S60 sedan. “The number 60 in our model range is reserved for our sportiest models,” said Stephen Odell, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars, in his news conference here in Geneva. “Now with the S60 we’re placing ourselves on the true enthusiast’s radar screen.”

Naturally, the S60 is also loaded with Volvo safety ideas. Mr. Odell brought up the topic of pedestrian deaths, which, he said, accounts “for around 14 percent of all traffic fatalities in Europe.” (According to a Volvo news release, the figure is around 11 percent in the United States.) The S60 is the first car equipped with its Pedestrian Detection System, which Volvo says uses radar and cameras to detect pedestrians and then applies full brakes until the car is stopped. It is effective at avoiding collisions at speeds up to around 21 miles an hour.

Hans Nilsson, product manager on the S60, says the car will go into production in May and will be “priced like an Audi A4.” Mr. Odell added that the V60 sport wagon will be released later this year.

Hispano-Suiza (with a hyphen) was formed in 1904 in Barcelona on the foundation of Spanish pesos and the engineering expertise of Swiss Marc Birkigt. The fabulous cars the company made until 1938 once rivaled Rolls-Royce in quality and panache. Hispano-Suiza today is part of SAFRAN, the French aerospace group, and no longer makes cars. The new Hispano Suiza (no hyphen) “wants to point out, explicitly, that is not the legal successor of the historical brand Hispano-Suiza,” said its principal, Erwin Leo Himmel, the former Volkswagen design chief, who lives and works in Barcelona. Legal stickiness aside, Mr. Himmel’s vision for an homage to the brand is essentially a rebodied German sports car. Underneath, it is an Audi R8, powered by a supercharged V-10 capable of powering the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.4 seconds. Top speed is 205 miles per hour. Production is scheduled to begin in Germany this summer with deliveries soon after, and only about 20 will be made, the company says. Price? About $950,000.

Chevrolet Caprice PPV

Chevrolet has finally revealed the concept at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. Named the 2011 Chevrolet Caprice police patrol vehicle, this car has been built following considerable feedback from police officers. The Caprice is not modeled on the existing civilian car design; instead, it has been specifically built to accommodate modern equipment and features essential to police duty.

This rear-drive sedan offers E85-compatible 6.0-liter V8 engine along with 355 horsepower and 385 pound-feet of torque. Beginning in the 2012 model, a V-6 engine will also be offered. It has a host of other utility features like the optional front-seat-only side curtain air bags, two trunk-mounted batteries among which one is used to power various police equipments, touch-screen digital display on the dashboard and a couple of storage locations including one for stacking weapons between the front seats. The cockpit is divided by a plexiglass barrier securing the driver and front-passenger from the person behind.

Toyota has confirmed its line-up for the 2010 Geneva motor show – and it's fighting back from the throttle recall crisis with a handful of new launches in every which market sector.

The Toyota Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) gets its world debut in production spec; it's the first mainstream hybrid car to be manufactured in the UK – and you can read all about it in the new March 2010 issue of CAR Magazine on sale on Wednesday 17 February. CAR went up to the Burnaston factory in Derbyshire for a deep dive on the new mass-market hybrid car from Toyota.

The second hybrid on show will be the new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, which will be exhibited in full production guise for its European debut.

It's also the European debut of the FT-86 sports car concept – and the first time we've seen the facelifted Toyota RAV4, which adopts a distinctly grown-up face. Is it just us, or there are equal shades of Toyota Landcruiser and VW Tiguan in the new 2010 RAV4 model?

Word got out from a BMW authority in Munich, that BMW plans on building their diesel-electric plug in hybrid gran tourer as a 2013 model. Why is this big news? Well, for one, look at the thing. The Vision EfficientDynamics is one of the most interesting looking concepts we’ve seen in a long, long time. And, on top of the, BMW is touting as a green performance car. A model capable of getting Toyota Prius-like gas mileage will putting down BMW M3 like figures. EXTERIOR: In order for the Vision EfficientDyanmics to conserve the most energy, it needed to literally glide through the wind. The less wind resistance, the less energy it needs to use to propel itself. BMW’s engineers tweaked the swooping and curvy exterior panels and outfitted the car with ultra low rolling resistance low-profile 195/55R21 tires and wide 21-inch alloy wheels with aero coverings to achieve a low drag coefficient of only 0.22. That’s lower than any production car on the road. Even less than a Formula 1 car. Despite looking like a ride straight out of Minority Report, BMW wanted to create a car with the profile of a classic GT. And they have; the rear bunches up as the front hood smoothes out and swoops down. The doors are similar to gullwing, except they pivot on front mounted hinges and are large enough to let the people riding in the back get out.

Tata Nano price could triple for U.S. market

Tata Motors used the timing of the Detroit Auto Show earlier this month to unveil its tiny little Nano here in North America for the first time, and we finally had a chance to see the cheap little runabout in person. At the time, there were some rumblings that the future Americanized Nano might sell for as little as $5,000, but the Detroit News is reporting that a source inside the company is projecting a price tag closer to $8,000 when the car hits the U.S. in the next three years.

Yes, that's more than triple what the Nano costs in its home market of India. Why such a dramatic increase? Says Warren Harris, Tata Technologies president:

The structural changes that would need to be made, the changes that would be required as far as emissions are concerned, and some of the features that would be appropriate to add to the vehicle for the North American market, obviously that would drive up the price point.

If and when the Tata Nano does hit a dealership near you, don't expect to see a twin-cylinder engine measuring just 600cc, either. That powerplant propels the diminutive people-mover to about 65 miles per hour, far too slow for American highways. Instead, we'd count on at least a liter and probably a third cylinder in order to hit something more like 90 mph on the top end. We'll see.

despite what may have been the most public development process in the auto industry's history, there's still lots of misinformation about the Chevrolet Volt. The extended-range electric vehicle has undergone innumerable tweaks for aerodynamics, manufacturing and reliability since it stole the auto show as a concept car in 2007, but the sleek four-door on Chevrolet's stand is identical to the cars that will roll off the assembly line this year.

Here are a few key facts to remember as you admire the production version at the auto show:

• There's no need to stop and recharge if you travel beyond the 40-mile range of the Volt's batteries. An onboard generator starts automatically to provide more electricity.

• The Volt will be built at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, formerly home to Cadillac and Buick large cars.

• The Volt's generator uses a new 1.4-liter, four-cylinder engine GM builds in Flint. A turbocharged version of the same engine will help the Chevrolet Cruze get 40 m.p.g. on the highway.

• The Volt's lithium-ion battery pack is assembled in Brownstown Township about 19 miles south of GM headquarters.

2011 Ford Mustang DUB 5.0 Edition

The 2011 Mustang 5.0-liter V-8 is set to make its hip-hop debut alongside Grammy Award-winning artist Nelly as part of his upcoming album’s artwork. The album, set to launch this spring, will feature a tricked-out 2011 Mustang GT customized by DUB Magazine.

The 35-year-old rapper, actor and mogul, who was most recently ranked third on Billboard Magazine’s “Artist of the Decade List,” says the Mustang is one of the hottest muscle cars ever to hit the streets.

“I don’t care where you grew up, everyone knows the Mustang. Crystal Worthem, Ford’s Multicultural Marketing communications manager, says Nelly is an amazing partner for Ford: Nelly has an impressive history within the entertainment world, just as the Mustang has a strong history within the automotive world.

“Nelly is a true car guy, there’s no denying that. When Nelly expressed interest in wanting to partner with Ford on the all-new 2011 Ford Mustang GT, we knew it was a perfect fit,” said Worthem.

“The Mustang has such appeal within the urban market. Since it was launched, the vehicle has made appearances in several of the most popular urban films,” Worthem added. “This was just a great opportunity for Ford, and we’re excited that the Mustang GT is going to be a part of one of the most anticipated albums of 2010.”

The exterior of the vehicle features a custom gloss black paint job with flat black racing stripes and a Street Scenes body kit complete with custom 22- and 24-inch wheels and Pirelli tires. The vehicle also includes a billet grille, hood scoop, tinted taillights, angel eyes headlights and a Borla exhaust.

In addition, the interior is a complete suede and leather design with a custom JL Audio system that includes two 12-inch subwoofers, amps and speakers.

Nelly says he can’t wait to hit the streets in his 2011 Mustang GT.

“I’m itching to get behind the wheel of my Mustang and really take it out on the streets. This vehicle being a part of my album artwork is just a reflection of the direction and feel that the album has. To be able to partner with Ford again on another vehicle that is going to change the automotive game is exciting,” said Nelly.

The U.S. production version of the Chevrolet Cruze, unveiled at the 2009 L.A. Auto Show, delivers many segment-leading features and details that challenge preconceived notions about what a compact car can be in North America.

Rumors about a new Chevrolet Volt-based Cadillac were true. Because today at the Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac took the wraps off a new concept based on the Chevy Volt's "Voltec" drivetrain. It's called the Converj.
This luxurious and sporty version of the Volt is drop-dead gorgeous. With styling that is instantly recognizable as Cadillac, the press conference showed that the car was designed to be aesthetically pleasing on its own. It's just a great shape that holds great promise. All the sharp edges and wide shoulders give it a distinctive look. GM gave the Converj a title of "Cadillac Of Electric Vehicles".
Inside, the Coverj's interior is purely Cadillac. So unlike the cheap plastics in any hybrid car, 2+2 Converj coupe Winter White synthetic suede and Midnight Black leather, polished aluminum and wood grain accents. The headliner made from silk and suede and a wool-blend carpeting are made from renewable materials. And in the center console, all the buttons operate by touching only.
Just like the Volt, Cadillac Converj’s Voltec system is made up of 16kWh, a T-shaped battery (made up of more than 220 lithium-ion cells), an electric-drive unit and a flex-fuel 4-cylinder engine-generator. That allows the Converj to produce a total of 161-hp with a maximum torque of 273 lb-ft working in 0 rpms. Working like a Extended-range electric-vehicle (E-REV) as the Chevrolet Volt, the Voltec technology allows the Converj to travel up to 40 miles on battery power alone. An onboard gasoline engine will allow it to travel hundreds of additional miles before it needs to be refueled or plugged in to recharge. Top speed is rated at 100 mph. GM says that it takes less than 3 hours to recharge the battery at 240V (about 8 hours from a 120V outlet). The Cadillac Converj also features GM’s Magnetic Ride Control which enhances ride-feel.
It's expect to hit the roads in its production form somewhere after the Volt, probably 2011. However, could this be the best electric car? Well from what appears, this Cadillac will surely make a fuss when it debuts in its production model.

GM confirms plans to build Volt-based Cadillac

General Motors Co will build a Cadillac version of its highly anticipated battery-powered Chevy Volt sometime in 2013 or later.

The Cadillac Converj will be the second GM vehicle built on the automaker's system combining a lithium-ion battery pack with a traditional engine as backup, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said late on Sunday.

The rechargeable or plug-in Cadillac is "heading for production" and will be designed, like the Volt, to be driven for 40 miles on battery power alone, Lutz said.

The Volt is expected to be priced near $40,000. The Cadillac variant will use technology developed for the Volt and will be aimed at consumers "who don't mind paying a large price for a luxury vehicle," Lutz said.

He said production plans for the Converj had yet to be determined but that it would not go on sale before 2013.

The comments from Lutz, who was speaking at an event organized by the Society of Automotive Analysts in Detroit, marked the first indication of the next step in GM's plug-in hybrid development efforts since the shake-up in the top leadership of the automaker late last year.

GM showed off a version of the Converj at last year's Detroit auto show but it had been uncertain when or whether the vehicle would move forward under the new management team headed by Chairman and acting Chief Executive Ed Whitacre.

The Volt is scheduled to go on sale in November this year but will be limited to 50,000 or 60,000 units of production on an annual basis at a maximum, Lutz said.

GM executives have said that they expect to lose money on the Volt because of its high development costs and the cost of its battery, estimated near $15,000 each.

For that reason, GM has said it intends to build a range of vehicles that will be based on the "Voltec" plug-in hybrid system to offset its costs over time.

The Volt, which GM has branded as an extended range electric vehicle, will be rechargeable at a standard outlet overnight. On longer trips, a small gas engine will kick in to send power to the battery to keep it from being depleted.

The new Volkswagen Polo will be available with a petrol and diesel variant. The petrol variant is equipped with a 1.2 litre engine with an output of 75HP @ 5400 rpm and a Torque of 110NM @ 3750 rpm.

The diesel variant is also equipped with the 1.2 litre engine with an output of 75HP @ 4200 rpm and torque of 180 NM @ 2000 rpm.

It will be available in three trim levels including Trendline, Comfortline and Highline and is paired with a 5-speed manual gear box.

The BMW M1 was the latest BMW amongst the series to have an engine in rear center position. This model has been revisited through the BMW M1 Homage in 2008. The model series of the BMW Concept is still awaited but it would be interesting to imagine what would be a model of sport entry level by the German manufacturer, a car smaller and more accessible than the legendary M1 and which would compete with the Porsche Cayman or Audi TT. This concept could be equipped with a V8 (the one of the next M5) combined with a manual gearbox or 7-speed automatic. Aerodynamics
All parts are made from the advance carbon fiber technology used in the aerospace and F1 racing industries. The exterior features a widebody kit with a new front bumper, front spoiler, front bonnet, front fenders, sideskirts, sideblades (or as PPI now calls them, Aeroblades), rear fenders, rear bumper, rear diffuser, rear spoiler, and a new rear engine cover with air channels that can be fitted with a Polycarbonate, scratch-resistant and UV coated glass in solid or slotted form. All this Carbon Fiber and lightweight materials strips about 250 kilos (551 lbs) from the vehicle's weight.

PPI engineers have managed to create a supercar out of the Audi R8, resulting in a wider, lighter, more stable, and more aggressive body. Keeping in mind the philosophy of "form follows function". Every air channel, intake has a function and purpose on this mid-engined supercar. First and foremost to increase air delivery to the engine, secondly, to provide greater engine cooling, thirdly, to increase brake cooling, and fourth, to increase aerodynamic stability.

Performance

Naturally, this required bigger wheels, brakes, and cooling. PPI uses a 380 mm braking system with six-piston calipers in the front, and four-piston calipers at the back. Interior Performance
PPI completely re-appoints the interior per clients request, and turns the R8 cabin into a "members-only" lounge with a motorsport flair. The production interior is replaced with the finest quality materials. The Gems of the interior are the PPI Sport Steering wheel with Carbon Fiber Rim and perforated black leather, and of course, the PPITM insignia in aluminum. The hand-brake lever, door sill protectors, driver and radio console surround, door trim, center console inserts, kneepad trim are all crafted from carbon fiber, as are the ultra-light weight folding sport seats with airbag.

Aerodynamic Packages
The RAZOR GT/GTR packages are offered in 4 levels. The core bodykit is the RAZOR GT, this is the widebody package in paintable carbon fiber without the engine cover/air channels and without the rear spoiler.

The second, is the previously shown RAZOR GTR kit. This is the same as the GT kit and includes the additional Rear engine cover/air channels, Front Radiator Air channel (that is continous with the front bonnet) and Rear Spoiler. Presented at the 2009 TopMarques Show in Monaco.

The Mustang is not just an iconic pony car or a retro-modern throw-back to simpler times. It's a fan-favorite performance vehicle that has a rabid and enthusiastic base of drivers, tuners and manufacturers behind it. So news of the return of the '5.0' badge to the front fender of the 2011 Ford Mustang is likely to be met with a roar of approval, as are these photos of the car that bears it.

Earlier this month at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show, Ford unveiled its 2011 Mustang, but only the base V-6 model, which itself has been upgraded with a new 3.7-liter mill churning out 305 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

At next month’s 2010 Detroit Auto Show, however, the Blue Oval will pull the wraps off the new V-8 powered GT, which we can confirm will pack a 5.0-liter V-8 with 412 horsepower and 390 pounds-feet of torque on tap--just 14 horsepower shy of the output of the Chevrolet Camaro SS. These photos of the car are early leaks, but expect full high-res photos and details once the show draws near.

The new engine will come with four valves per cylinder and Ford’s latest and twin independent variable valve timing. Tuned exhaust headers, a forged-steel crankshaft, plus high-performance pistons and connecting rods will also come as standard. Customers will be able to pick from a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

Finally, fuel economy is claimed to be as high as 25 mpg, but this is most likely a highway figure.

Slow Sales of Honda Insight Give Insight into Hybrid Market

The failure of the lower-cost Honda Insight hybrid to dent the market for the Prius has some in the auto industry answering yes. Business Week reports that the Insight, which was introduced this year with a base MSRP of $19,800, over $2,000 less than the Prius, is still being outsold by Toyota’s car 6 to 1.

The Insight’s sluggish sales is proving a useful cautionary tale to other automakers looking to catch up to Toyota in the hybrid market, and some have already made major strategic shifts as a result.

General Motors, which will introduce the Volt late next year through its Chevy brand, has scrapped plans for a “Prius-killer” hybrid sedan that would get 53 miles to the gallon. Part of the reason, no doubt, is that the beleaguered car company needs to focus its energies on making the Volt successful. But the other big reason is Prius’ merciless crushing of the Insight.

Stemming from a supposedly leaked price sheet, the new V8 supercar will start in Europe at €162,900, before any taxes are taken into account. At today's exchange rates, that figures to about $240,000 – around halfway between the price of the outgoing F430 and the 430 Scuderia.

Of course, that's not an official figure – Ferrari North America has yet to confirm pricing for the U.S. market – and the long list of options amply demonstrates that the $240k starting price is exactly that: a starting price. The Jeep Wrangler Overland is perfect for those craving travel and adventure. The Mopar design team took a 2009 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon and turned it into a mobile “on-the-go” self-contained campsite.

To increase cargo capacity for hauling gear, the Jeep Wrangler Overland’s rear seats are replaced with a large, flat, rubberized utility floor. Mounted to the cargo rack is an all-new ARB two-person Simpson II rooftop-mounted tent and touring awning. The interior of the Jeep Wrangler Overland features water-resistant Mopar front-seat covers, rugged Mopar slush mats, a Daystar dash bin and lower switch panel that powers added accessories.

Enhancing off-road travel is an American Expedition Vehicles’ (AEV), Nth Degree, 3-inch suspension lift and a Full Traction rear sway bar. The lift allows aggressive 35-inch tires mounted on 17-inch steel Mopar winter/off-road wheels to fit under the Jeep. Additional off-road protection at the front and rear is provided by AEV steel bumpers and for added security, a Warn 9.5ti winch.

RDSport RS46 Based On BMW M3 E92

For over 25 years now, RDSport has been tuning BMW cars. Now from an M3, they’ve created the RS46 that can, as the official announcement said it, can withstand the rigors of the Formula One.

The standard 4.0Liter V8 has been reworked to be able to fit in larger aluminum pistons, forged, billet connecting rods and a new billet crankshaft with a longer stroke. All these changes gave the RS64 a new 4.6Liter, 392kW (524 horsepower) with 556Nm (410 pound feet) of torque.

Chassis enhancement is done with the specially-valved Bilstein shocks and RDSport Springs. Differentiating kit includes a carbon/Kevlar RDSport front bumper, a carbon fiber meshed rear diffuser, and factory-PDC-compatible aero bits. The interior may be customized according to the customer’s needs.

BMW G-Power X5 M and X6 M Typhoon

Another BMW tuner, G-Power, comes out with the aerodynamic kit for the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M which is largely based on the G-Power Widebody-Kit Typhoon.

Both SUVs feature a full carbon fiber front skirt with striking air inlets, a bonnet made of Kevlar hybrid or carbon fiber, and wide carbon fiber side skirts. A rear diffuser compliments the bragging four tailpipes. The X5 M is fitted with one-piece aluminum wheels measuring 11×23 and 12×23 inches while the X6 M’s three-piece versions also have the same dimensions. Additionally the X6 M can be had with 22-inch wheels. Tires are 315/25 ZR 23 high performance Michelins. The suspension systems can be lowered by 30mm.

The twin turbo engines were boosted from 408kW (550hp) to 441kW (600hp) at 6,000rpm and peak torque is 700Nm at 2,000rpm. Acceleration from 0 - 100km/h (62mph) happens in 4.5 seconds, 0 - 200km/h (124.2mph) in 16.2 seconds and top speed is beyond 300km/h (186.4mph).

Other features of the package include a sports steering wheel, a G-Power design speedometer, carbon fiber inserts and more.

Renault Megane CC Spied

A Renault Megane CC is caught testing in the cold weather before it appears at its scheduled debut in Geneva.

A few new details of the Renault Megane CC shows that two rows of what appears to be LEDs are integrated in the rear as brake indicators, with a whited-out section for reverse and turn. The vehicle will also share design with the Megane coupe, including a similar front fascia as seen with the CC’s placement and integration of the fog-lights and air intakes. The engine will also be the same, with a choice of bio-fuel, diesel and petrol options.

The Renault Megane CC is ideally set to be launched in spring to early summer as it is the perfect timing for drop-tops in the market. Further details about the Renault Megane CC will be available as the Geneva Motor Show nears.

Toyota to unveil new hybrid concept at Detroit auto show

Toyota announced Monday in Japan that it plans to market a plug-in hybrid car worldwide in 2011 -- earlier than previous estimates.Toyota Motor Corp. plans to introduce a new hybrid concept vehicle during the 2010 North American International Auto Show next month in Detroit.

The Japanese automaker did not release any details about the vehicle, but analysts expect it to be a dedicated compact concept.

The concept vehicle is expected to become a production model within two years, joining the Prius, Camry and Highlander hybrids in the Toyota lineup, and adding to the company's lead in gasoline-electric hybrid technology.

2011 BMW Z4 sDrive35is To Debut at 2010 Detroit Auto Show

BMW will top off the Z4 lineup with a new performance model called the sDrive35is.
BMW will publicly unveil the new 2011 Z4 sDrive35is roadster in early January at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. The range-topping Z4 sDrive35is features a new M Sports package that also will be offered on other Z4 variants when the Z4 sDrive35is reaches U.S. dealers in spring 2010.

The Z4 sDrive35is gets an even hotter version of the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder that powers the current Z4 sDrive35i. BMW has hiked boost pressure and air intake flow, resulting in an increase in output from 300 to 335 horsepower and an increase in torque from 300 to 332 pound-feet. An overboost function enables the engine to deliver brief bursts of up to 369 lb-ft.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. BMW says the Z4 sDrive35is can gallop from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, with acceleration from rest facilitated by a Launch Control function. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

As part of the Z4 sDrive35is upgrades, BMW has reprogrammed the electric power steering to provide more driver feedback and has fitted 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels (19-inch wheels and tires are optional).

The Z4 sDrive35is receives new M Sport upgrades as well, including adaptive suspension with electronic dynamic damping control and ride height reduced by 0.4 inch.

Other M Sport features include a thick-rimmed leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, sport seats, gray-face instrument dials, piped floor mats, driver's footrest, doorsill strips and matte aluminum/carbon accents.

The 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT

You can't argue with how useful a minivan can be. It just so happened that I had to help a friend move a 50-inch television, which worked out well because I had this minivan for the night. The Stow-n-Go seats flipped-up with ease, and the power third-row seats disappeared into the floor at the touch of a button to give us the room we needed to slide the oversized box into the van.

Chrysler really does have minivans down well. Like our departed long-term Town & Country, this Grand Caravan was smooth shooting down the expressway at 80 mph and is a surefooted ride around town. Steering is light and quick to respond, and pickup from the V6 is brisk. The brakes are strong and offer a firm pedal feel.

The amount of entertainment packed into the cabin makes me jealous as I think back to the days of being stuffed in the back of a Toyota Previa for long road trips.

If there is a better vehicle than a minivan for large families, I can't think of it at the moment. I will tip my hat to the Honda Odyssey for better ride quality and nicer interior surroundings, but this Dodge isn't too far behind.

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: I like this as much as I liked the long term Town & Country--which was a lot.

It's just so practical. The gobs of room, the sliding doors that can be operated from the driver's seat and the interior's clever layout are all good. Is this the perfect family vehicle? Could well be.

It's a quiet, refined traveler that goes down the road as smoothly as many luxury cars. There's plenty of power for a minivan, and I have no issues with the driving as far as minivans go.

If you only need to move five people at a time, I'd recommend almost anything other than a minivan. But to be able to haul seven people, a bunch of stuff and get 20-plus mpg on the freeway is impressive.

COPY EDITOR CYNTHIA L. OROSCO: This Grand Caravan was a champ in transporting family to and from a party. Yes, the van has most of the same features of our beloved Chrysler Town & Country, but the ride of the T&C feels smoother and more solid, even in the weeks immediately before it left. This Grand Caravan felt too light in the corners, something just seemed off.

Other than that, the only other complaints were the high step-in/out and the low roofline. My 6-foot-2 brother and 5-foot-10 uncle got a few bumps climbing out of the van, and my short mom and aunt had a bit of a tough time getting in. But we all enjoyed the great sound system during the drive and having room for six people to comfortably ride. With the cushiony seats and enough room in back for coats, purses and food, the Grand Caravan did its job well over the weekend.

2010 Volkswagen New Beetle Final Edition Coupe and Convertible

The Volkswagen New Beetle will emit its very last, well, whatever sound a beetle makes; a replacement is due in 18 months. To send off the current model, Volkswagen is producing 1500 New Beetle convertibles and 1500 coupes in special commemorative livery. Coupes will come in Aquarius Blue with black roofs, while convertibles will be rendered in Aquarius Blue over Campanella White with a matching white top and leather interior. All Final Editions will get individually numbered exterior plaques and ride on Sport suspensions with five-spoke 17-inch wheels.

After more than a decade of continuous production in its current form, the New Beetle, which we consider the “truest test of masculinity,” is not exactly new anymore. So we can’t say that we’re all that misty-eyed about the car’s departure, and we have no idea what VW will do as a follow-up, we just know that there will indeed be one and that reusing the New Beetle name isn’t a sure thing. Once we know more about what form that car will take—we sort of hope it winds up looking a little like the Ragster Concept from 2005—we will let you know. But we’d bet our bug zapper it’ll stay round.

Launch Report Citroen C3

I imagine it will be a while before anyone at Citroen is prepared to say this without insisting on anonymity, but it strikes me that the new C3's launch date of 15 January 2010 won't be a moment too soon. The current C3, now well into the coughing-up-blood stage, appeared in 2002, and it wasn't much cop even back then. In particular it felt very cheap indeed, and its design, described by Citroen at the time as "friendly-looking, distinctive and stylish", made it look, to me at least, like a trilobite.

The new C3, which is almost exactly the same size as a Ford Fiesta, feels like the work of a company which is at its ease with larger and more luxurious cars. It's not quite as impressive in that respect as the Fiesta, or indeed the Volkswagen Polo, but it is certainly a major improvement (or a "huge leap" - Citroen's words again) over what has gone before. And it looks nothing whatever like a trilobite.

It does, however, look slightly odd, in all forms other than the entry-level VT. That version has a conventional windscreen, whereas the others (VTR+, Exclusive and the special edition Airdream+ I'll be dealing with shortly) have what Citroen describes as a Panoramic Zenith screen, which extends beyond the heads of the front passengers. You probably didn't know, and I didn't either, that the average angle from the driver's eyeline to the top of the screen in a supermini is 28 degrees. Well, with the Panoramic Zenith, it's 108 degrees.

If you drive in constant fear that somebody may be about to drop a grand piano on you from a tenth-storey window, the C3 is the supermini for you, since you can check whether or not this is going to happen simply by glancing upwards. Personally, I'm rather casual, perhaps wrongly, about assaults of this nature, and that's one reason I'm not a great fan of the Panoramic Zenith. Another is that I can't help wondering how much it would cost to replace the screen if it were to be irreparably harmed (which could happen - I mean, even a piccolo is going to do a lot of damage from ten storeys up).

A third is that the screen makes the C3 look as if it has a bad case of receding hairline, and a fourth is that I don't like having all that glass around me because it makes me feel vulnerable. There's no good reason for that. It just does, and I don't like it. Fortunately, if you are likewise minded, you can block out most of the glass by pulling a cover across it, which is what I would do every time.

I would also, without hesitation, buy a diesel C3 rather than a petrol one. That's not just because the diesels are more economical, are cheaper to tax thanks to their lower CO2 emissions and have better mid-range performance, but also because the ride is so much better. From my brief experience so far, the petrol cars are just too bouncy, whereas the diesels feel a lot more secure even when you're just pottering around town.

All the same, even the diesel C3 hatchbacks are not quite as splendid to drive as their Picasso mini-MPV equivalents, which I find very strange indeed. The Picasso is also a lot more practical, of course, though the hatch has a very useful load capacity of 300 litres with all the seats in place. That's 200 less than the Picasso, but very good for a supermini; in fact Citroen says it's class-leading, which is true, though it's only five litres more than the Fiesta and the Hyundai i20 provide.

There is a lot of room for front passengers too, as there was in the old C3, but rear legroom is limited to the extent that four six-foot adults would find it difficult to get comfortable. Bearing in mind how superminis are generally used, though, I doubt that many customers are going to wail and gnash their teeth over this.

Your local Citroen dealer will be able to talk you through the differences between the trim levels, but a couple of points are worth mentioning here. All versions except the VT get air-conditioning as standard, and all except the Exclusive have full-sized spare wheels (the Exclusive gets a space-saver, but at least it's not one of those daft repair kits which are no use to man nor beast). The Exclusive also stands alone in that it's the only one available with rear electric windows, and the only one supplied - optionally, at extra cost - with ESP, which has dropped it from a possible five stars to just four in the Euro NCAP crash test ratings.

The Airdream+, which comes only with the 90bhp 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine, has more or less the same equipment as the mid-range VTR+, apart from having steel wheels rather than alloys, but it's special in that it has by far the best combined fuel economy of the range at 74.3mpg (even the less powerful 1.4 diesel is more than 8mpg shy of this) and is exempt from VED thanks to official CO2 emissions of 99g/km. At £14,490 it's more than halfway up the price list, though, and like the cheapest (1.1 petrol VT, £10,790) and most expensive (1.6 HDi 110bhp Exclusive, £16,140) and the only automatic (1.6 petrol 120bhp Exclusive, £15,590) it won't go into production until March, two months after the rest of the range has started appearing in UK showrooms.

"Only serious, safe tuning will bring the hoped-for driving pleasure!“ Under this motto, the Association of German Car Tuners (VDAT) every year launches a special concept car. In 2010, BMW AG is providing a BMW 123d Coupe for the Association's "TUNE IT! SAFE!“ initiative, which is also supported by the Police and the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Road Development. Most of the vehicle accessory equipment has been supplied by Aachen-based BMW tuning specialist AC Schnitzer.

As in the last four years, a police vehicle has been professional converted as part of the promotion. The AC Schnitzer "ACS1 2.3d“, based on the BMW 123d Coupe, shows that safe tuning is far from boring. VDAT-member AC Schnitzer has upgraded the 2.3 D engine to 241 HP (177 kW) and 480 Nm. The police car with 6-speed automatic transmission now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, so would acquit itself well even in the fastest pursuit. The latest AC Schnitzer wheels Type IV BiColor are fitted with tires from TUNE IT! SAFE! main sponsor Hankook. The low, safe road position is achieved with the sports suspension from the Aachenbased specialist with 30 mm lowering. The bodystyling kit consists of two-piece front spoiler, rear skirt insert, rear wing and rear roof spoiler. Good visibility is ensured by the "LEDayFlex“ modern daytime running lights from Hella, and optimum rearward vision by the AC Schnitzer "New Generation" sports mirrors.

In the interior, the guardians of the law could enjoy leather racing bucket seats with AC Schnitzer logo and silver genuine carbon fiber trim on the dashboard, center console, door handles and steering wheel, which are perfectly complemented by the aluminum pedals and aluminum foot rests. A further highlight is the G-force indicator, which measures and displays the centrifugal forces inside the car.

The concept car impressively demonstrates large parts of the tuning accessory range from AC Schnitzer. To give the BMW the essential, authentic look of a "real" police car, Foliatec supplied the original stickering and Hella the flashing lights. Even the police could - and would like to - drive the converted vehicle in public road traffic. To their regret however, the concept car will not be brought into use and is not available in this complex form. Nonetheless, it makes an important contribution towards achieving the aim of the initiative: to combat illegal, unsafe tuning and counterfeiting. All AC Schnitzer conversions are however available commercially and are of course TÜV-approved.

Lexus has introduced an all-new, second-generation GX 460 luxury utility vehicle for 2010 that is more powerful, more efficient, quieter and more luxurious than the GX 470 model it replaces. The 2010 GX 460 achieves all of these significant developments while its 10 standard airbags and the available Pre-Collision System help enhance safety.

Positioned between the brand’s LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle and unibody-based RX models, the 2010 GX 460 combines “right sized” midsize packaging with family-friendly comfort and premium craftsmanship. The GX 460 has a standard seven-passenger configuration. Once again built with rugged body-on-frame construction, the 2010 GX 460 is also equipped with full-time four-wheel drive and the advanced Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) to help provide both exceptional on-road ride and handling and true off-road capability.

The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is powered by an all-new 4.6-liter V8 that is both more powerful and more efficient than the 4.7-liter V8 it replaces. The new engine produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and is teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. Combined city/highway fuel economy is improved by 13 percent to an EPA-estimated 17 mpg (vs. 15 mpg in the 2009 GX 470) — better than other V8 luxury utility vehicles and competitive with some six-cylinder models. The GX 460 has an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

With the same vehicle footprint as the GX 470 it replaces, the 2010 GX 460 provides a more versatile interior. The second row seat slides 4.1 inches fore/aft to maximize passenger and cargo carrying ability. The foldable and reclining second row seats also feature a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats. The rear door window uses a flip-up glass panel for added convenience.

Luxury is enhanced in the 2010 GX 460 by an even quieter cabin, as well as new additional standard features and options. The 2010 GX 460 features standard heated and ventilated front seats for example. Among the new luxury options are semi-aniline leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated outer second-row seats. New multimedia features – both standard and optional – expand onboard family entertainment choices.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The 2010 GX 460 takes its model designation from an all-new 4.6-liter V8 engine. The new 32-valve DOHC engine features aluminum alloy cylinder heads and block with dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i), which controls valve timing and overlap on both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, fuel efficiency and emissions. (The previous 4.7 had VVT only on the intake camshafts.) Peak torque is also up for the new 4.6, now 329 lb.-ft. at 3,500 rpm vs. 323 lb.-ft. at 3,400 rpm for the 4.7-liter engine.

The new 4.6-liter V8 is teamed to a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, compared to a five-speed automatic with the previous 4.7-liter, benefiting both performance and fuel economy. The new transmission fits in the same space as the previous five- speed and features a higher top gear ratio. The new powertrain helps make the 2010 GX 460 feel more responsive in everyday driving and quieter than the previous model. The 2010 GX 460 retains the same 6,500-lb. towing capacity as the GX 470 offered.

The GX 460 comes equipped with standard full-time four-wheel drive using an electronically controlled transfer case and a TORSEN® torque-sensing center differential. It also offers a low range for off-road driving. The TORSEN differential distributes power 40:60 under most driving conditions and changes the ratio as needed based on steering input and wheel slip.

The ability to change to a 30:70 ratio during steering maneuvers helps enhance vehicle tracking through curves. If the rear wheels spin, the center differential can change the ratio to 50:50 to help control the slippage. The TORSEN differential also helps make the GX 460 less prone to slippage caused by sudden changes in road-surface conditions, such as driving through a puddle or over an ice patch. The rear differential has also been strengthened for 2010.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is one of the few premium brand luxury utility vehicles that can deliver genuine trail driving capability. Combining that capability with Lexus luxury and on-road performance makes it even more exceptional. Lexus studied vehicle usage of current owners and found that many use their GX models for family hauling during the week and vacations and camping trips on weekends. They often tow a boat or watercraft and sometimes drive to areas with unpaved and rugged trails.

Like the previous GX 470, the 2010 GX 460 has robust body-on-frame construction and does not compromise on- or off-road performance; the high-strength chassis and dynamic suspension control technology support both.

The available Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) with three modes: Normal, Sport and Comfort, and independent front suspension delivers a smooth on-road ride without compromising rugged off-road capabilities. The 2010 GX 460 rides on larger standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/60 R18 tires, versus 17-inch wheels for the 2009 GX 470 model.

The power rack-and-pinion steering system helps make it easier to maneuver the GX 460 in tight spaces. Rear Adjustable Height Control (AHC) enhances the vehicle’s flexibility in a wide range of driving situations.

Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS)
KDSS is standard on the GX 460, and enhanced for 2010 with steering and yaw sensors. By adjusting roll resistance provided by the front and rear stabilizer bars, KDSS can reduce maximum body-roll angle by as much as 50 percent to help enhance both on-road handling response and off-highway capability.

Using hydraulic cylinders acting on each stabilizer bar and linked by a pressure-sensing valve, KDSS reduces the degree of roll stiffness provided by the stabilizer bars in response to changing road conditions and driver inputs. Because KDSS allows the stabilizer bars to disengage in certain situations like off-road driving, the nominal stiffness of the bars can be notably increased to help reduce body-tilt and improve on-road handling.

During on-road cornering, when both front and rear cylinders are compressed, no fluid flows in the system and the stabilizer bars work conventionally to help reduce body lean. In off-road driving situations, KDSS allows the wheels on each axle to move with a larger degree of side- to-side independence, helping to minimize any tendency for wheel lift. When the GX 460 encounters an uneven surface, one compressed cylinder causes fluid to flow between the front and rear cylinders, allowing the stabilizer bars to move freely. That action increases wheel travel and articulation and helps to equalize wheel loading.

Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control
In addition to KDSS, the 2010 Lexus GX 460 offers optional Crawl Control a new technology that helps make driving off-road easier. The Crawl Control feature automatically modulates the throttle and brake, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. Crawl Control is also useful for helping to free the vehicle from sand, mud or snow.

When the transmission is shifted into low range, Crawl Control regulates engine speed and output, along with braking force, to propel the vehicle forward or in reverse at one of five low- speed settings. This allows the driver to maintain focus while steering over very rough level ground or steep grades, without having to also modulate the throttle, or brake, pedals. Crawl Control also actuates the front and rear “virtual” locking differentials to help reduce tire slippage and optimize chassis behavior.

Without canceling Crawl Control, the driver can reduce vehicle speed by braking or adjusting the crawling speed with a selector switch. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) provides additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back while starting on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Downhill Assist Control (DAC) is designed to augment the low-speed descending ability of the transmission’s low range by helping to hold the vehicle to a target speed with no intervention from the driver. Active traction control (A-TRAC) provides the traction benefits of having locking front and rear differentials, but with lower weight. The system can apply the brake to a slipping wheel, while transferring torque to the wheels with better traction.

A steering angle indicator in the gauge panel shows the driver at a glance which direction the front wheels are pointing – useful for situations where this can be difficult to discern, such as driving off-road or when parking.

Safety/Security Features
The GX 460, like all Lexus models, is equipped with an array of dynamic safety systems. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps keep the GX 460 going on its intended course by detecting front- and rear-wheel slide during cornering and attempting to control either condition with a combination of torque intervention and individual wheel braking. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) utilizes the anti-lock brake system (ABS) and distributes proper brake force between the front and rear wheels according to driving conditions and wheel-load.

Brake Assist (BA) is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking, and if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to engage ABS, the system supplements the applied braking power.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes a class-leading standard 10 airbags: dual front and side airbags; driver and front passenger knee airbags; second-row seat-mounted side airbags, and roll-sensing side curtain airbags covering all two or three rows. The front airbags are designed to inflate according to collision severity. The roll-sensing side curtain airbags are designed to deploy when a severe tilt angle, roll or lateral G-force is detected.

The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) can help reduce collision damage. The package includes Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, which uses millimeter-wave radar to measure and help maintain a pre-set distance from a vehicle traveling ahead. The multi-information display within the combination meter will show a car icon with the selected following distance. If, based on a variety of inputs, PCS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system preemptively retracts the front seat belts and pre-initializes BA so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal.

In addition, an available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor and Lane Departure Alert (LDA) is now available for the 2010 GX 460. Using two small cameras mounted at the front of the vehicle that work in conjunction with millimeter-wave radar, the system is sensitive enough to detect certain nonmetallic objects. The Driver Monitor System uses a third camera, mounted on the steering column, monitors the orientation of the driver’s face.

If the camera detects that it appears the driver is not looking directly ahead for a few seconds or more, and if an obstacle is detected ahead, then it alerts the driver, first with a warning chime and a flashing light. As the car gets closer to the obstacle, PCS can begin to gently apply the brakes on its own.

To help assist the driver in maneuvering around the obstacle, the system reprograms the steering ratio, amplifying the intensity and quickness of the steering response. At the same time, PCS automatically retracts the front seatbelts and prepares the brake system to respond with full force when activated by the driver in anticipation of a possible impact.

LDA alerts the driver of unintentional lane departure by sounding a warning buzzer and displaying an alert. It does not steer the vehicle independently and it requires the driver to maintain active steering control.

New for 2010, active front headrests move up and forward almost instantly in the event of certain lower speed rear-end collisions when the force of the occupant’s body is applied to the seat back. Also new, the available Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), illuminates a turn or curve as the driver steers into it and includes high intensity discharge (HID) headlights. The available Pre-Collision System with Driver Attention Monitor Package includes new Intelligent High Beams with headlamp cleaners automatically adjust the high beams to avoid blinding drivers in oncoming vehicles. The cleaners help ensure optimal headlight performance in all weather conditions.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
The GX 460 presents a luxurious passenger environment with the fit and finishes expected in a Lexus. Standard features include: eight-way power-adjustable, heated/ventilated front seats; automatic climate control; leather trimmed seats and surfaces; steering wheel audio controls; rain-sensing windshield wipers; power moonroof; a wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; memory system for the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirrors; and an overhead console with integrated HomeLink® transmitter.

Equipped for family multimedia entertainment, the 2010 GX 460 comes standard with a Lexus Premium nine-speaker audio system with integrated iPod® control and XM® Radio receiver. Bluetooth® capability includes music streaming and hands free phone.

A rear back-up camera is standard on the 2010 GX 460. The camera provides the driver a view of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle when engaged in reverse gear, projecting the image on the standard 4.2-inch multi-information display, or the optional navigation system’s LCD display.

Lexus designed the 2010 GX 460 to combine function and elegance, with unmistakable brand identity rooted in the L-finesse design language. The overall effect conveys the vehicle’s full-range capability and luxury credentials. A key goal of the designers was to have the vehicle create the impression of being sculpted from a single block of metal.

The distinctive grille features three horizontal bars and, upon closer inspection, intricate detail and texture that conveys renowned Lexus attention to detail. Distinctive character lines on the hood and a chrome surround frame the grille. The front bumper features standard integrated fog lamps.

Functional design elements include low-profile roof rails and an acoustic insulation windshield that help reduce wind noise. Tasteful luxury touches abound, including green-tint UV protection front glass, privacy glass on rear windows, and running board courtesy lamps.

Interior Design
The 2010 GX 460 provides the luxury appointments and workmanship of a Lexus sedan. Reduced drivetrain noise, especially in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range, combined with new sound
insulating, dampening and absorbing materials used throughout the frame and body, provide an even quieter cabin than before. Adopting a feature from the flagship LS sedans, the GX 460 uses one-touch power windows with motors that reduce speed near the closure point to minimize the sound of the window closing.

The instrument panel is designed to appear as if formed from a single metal bar and is arranged to place all vital controls within easy reach. Optitron® instrument gauges are a traditional and functional Lexus design element. Leather-trimmed seat facings, headrests, armrests, door trim, shift knob and steering wheel also add to the Lexus touch. For 2010, expanded wood trim, instrument panel stitching and soft-touch surfaces enhance the luxury feel. The GX offers three interior colors for 2010: Ecru, Black and Sepia.

Lexus Enform, available on navigation-equipped vehicles, includes all of the Safety Connect features and builds upon them with the premium services of Destination Assist and eDestination. With eDestination, drivers can go online via LexusDrivers.com to save and sort destinations in up to 20 folders, each holding as many as 10 destinations. Then drivers can send the locations-up to 200 at a time-to their vehicle, where they will be available for download into the navigation system. Online, drivers can create personalized location names (e.g., “Favorite sushi,” “1 PM Appt,” “Kids’ doc,” etc.) and even list notes about their saved locations, all helping them see exactly the information they choose in the vehicle.

XM NavTraffic informs the driver of current traffic conditions with real-time traffic displays. When traffic problems are detected the navigation system alerts the driver so that the route can be adjusted.

XM Sports and Stocks features in-vehicle updates on sports and stocks so drivers can stay connected to their favorite teams and investment data while on the road. XM Sports provides game results and schedules for up to five personally selected North American national league sports teams while XM Stocks supplies data for up to 10 personally selected stocks. After inputting their selections, drivers can access the reports either by the navigation system, or by using the voice command system, adding a new level of flexibility.

On Thursday Buick will reveal the 2011 Regal sport sedan to customers in the L.A. area. Armed with turbocharged horsepower, a driver-selectable suspension system and a firm, European-tuned chassis, it delivers a driving experience that rivals the best import sport sedans in the segment.

“The 2011 Buick Regal is like nothing you’ve ever experienced from this brand,” said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick GMC. “The Regal is the next chapter in Buick’s transformation and will expand the portfolio to include a sport sedan.”

The new Regal arrives in the second quarter of 2010, with its sights aimed squarely on competitors like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60. It has a longer wheelbase and greater trunk volume than those vehicles, along with standard features – including a six-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels and OnStar – that aren’t offered standard on either competitor.

The Regal’s development is rooted in Germany, where the globally led engineering team created the award-winning Opel Insignia – the 2009 European Car of the Year. Design story

The Regal’s sleek design blends the sweeping silhouette and proportions of a coupe in a progressive package that suggests motion from all angles. Great attention to detail complements that aggressive styling, with tailored applications of Buick’s signature design cues, such as the waterfall grille, select use of chrome trim and superior fit and finish of the exterior panels.

“Regal is all about great proportions,” said John Cafaro, design director, passenger car. “For example, with the fenders flared to wrap around the tires. It’s an aggressive stance that people aren’t used to seeing in recent Buicks.”

The car’s performance-oriented spirit is also conveyed in sleek, sculpted body-side detail and aggressive headlamps that further suggest motion. At the rear, an abbreviated deck and tucked-in body panels are the hallmarks of a contemporary sport sedan, with bold taillamps and their intricate lighting elements reinforcing Regal’s attention to detail. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard.

The sweeping design motif carries over to the interior, where the side panels flow uninterrupted into the instrument panel. The instruments have the look of expensive sport timepieces and are lit with ice-blue LED lights. The center stack, housing the climate and “infotainment” controls, was designed to allow for a lower, driver-centric instrument panel profile. Features such as a thick-rimmed, leather-wrapped steering wheel and firm, highly bolstered and leather-covered seats also support the sport-oriented driving experience.

“There is great design harmony between the exterior and interior,” said Cafaro. “The feeling of flow and motion carries through in an engaging manner that makes you want to take the Regal out to your favorite twisting road to see what it can do.”

A breakthrough interior

The Regal’s finely crafted, sporty and well-appointed interior builds on the exceptional attention to detail found in the Enclave and LaCrosse, blending signature styling cues with contemporary sport sedan aesthetics.

Regal’s firm, highly bolstered seats were benchmarked against the top import competitors for comfort and support, while a standard flow-through center console offers plenty of storage for passengers in the front and back.

Smart applications of technology are also hallmarks of the Regal, including details such as a multi-function controller on the center console for operation of the audio system, navigation system and the Bluetooth phone. The faceplate for the “infotainment” screen is set at a 30-degree angle to contribute to the car’s flowing interior design.

A new era in Buick design is also seen in the satin metallic, piano black and new, Kibo-patterned interior trim materials. Kibo is a rich, dark, progressively grained wood that lends an international flair to the Regal.

Under the hood

Unique with its all-four-cylinder powertrain, the Regal relies on the excellent horsepower-per-liter ratio of the Ecotec engine family to deliver smart, on-demand performance that is also very efficient.

Both the standard 2.4L engine and the available 2.0L turbo use direct injection technology to optimize performance, reduce emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. The 2.4L is the same engine offered in the Buick LaCrosse, but in the smaller, lighter Regal, it delivers more agile performance. The 2.0L turbo cements the sport sedan credibility of the Regal, with on-demand power comparable to a V-6, but the inherent efficiency of a four-cylinder. To ensure responsive power across the rpm range, the 2.0L turbo uses a twin-scroll turbocharger that builds power quickly at lower rpm.

Distinct, uniquely calibrated six-speed automatic transmissions are paired with each engine. Both offer driver shift control that enhances the sporty driving feel of the Regal.

Driving experience

The chassis and structural systems were developed in Germany and give the Regal the handling and dynamics of a premium European sport sedan, as well as the quiet, refined ride and road manners expected of a Buick. The body structure is one of the most rigid in the segment, which is approximately 25-percent stiffer than the previous Regal. This solid structure supports more precise suspension tuning and a quieter ride.

A relatively long wheelbase of 107.8 inches (2738 mm) gives the Regal refined, well-balanced vehicle dynamics and supports comfortable ride tuning. Additionally, an independent MacPherson strut-type front suspension with single-path mountings and hydraulic ride bushings; a four-link independent rear suspension; hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering; and optimized four-wheel disc brakes are optimized to the capability of the individual powertrains and tailored to the expected use by drivers. Models equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine, for example, feature larger brakes.

Latest-generation electronic stability control (ESC or StabiliTrak), anti-lock brake system (ABS), and traction control system (TCS) are standard with Buick’s innovative, Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) real-time damping system offered on models equipped with the 2.0L turbo powertrain.

Interactive Drive Control System

Regal’s Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology (available on models with the available 2.0L turbo engine) offers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety. It is designed to change the personality of the car based on the personality of the driver. A sophisticated driving mode control module continually monitors driving style utilizing yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering wheel, throttle and vehicle speed. It defines the dynamic vehicle state, including acceleration, braking and cornering, to optimize chassis reactions. It also executes all of the IDCS driver selections.

All four dampers are electronically controlled and continuously adapt within milliseconds to the prevailing road conditions, vehicle movements and individual driving style. Chassis settings are adjustable by the driver, with Normal, Tour and Sport settings.

IDCS allows the driver to choose between three different operating modes that change the suspension settings, throttle response, shift pattern and steering sensitivity through the variable effort steering system. The three modes deliver three types of experiences:

Normal – balanced and optimized for all driving situations
Tour – optimized for comfort and relaxed driving on long journeys
Sport – optimized for road holding; enthusiast driving .

Selecting “Sport” mode optimizes the car for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response and speeding up the reaction of the automatic transmission. The “Tour” mode is optimal for long-distance cruising or rough road conditions, providing an increase in comfort. “Normal” or Default Mode is the perfect all-around setting for daily commuting and city traffic. The other major benefit of Interactive Drive Control is that it automatically adapts Regal’s performance settings to individual driving styles. When a driver begins to drive more aggressively it will tighten the suspension and increase steering effort and change to a more aggressive throttle response. When the vehicle senses that the driver is doing relaxed cruising, it adjusts settings for rolling smoothness and comfort.

Apart from a more rewarding driving experience, IDCS also offers safety benefits in emergency situations. For example, if an obstacle must be avoided when the car is in Tour mode, various chassis sensors convey this to the DMC and the dampers are stiffened within milliseconds, delivering greater body control.

2009 HUMMER H3T Sportsman Concept

The H3T Sportsman concept demonstrates the ideal midsize truck for the outdoor enthusiast whose weekends are spent in the field or stream. HUMMER designers enhanced the H3T Alpha's inherent functionality with a combination of powertrain modifications, suspension enhancements and a balanced selection of Genuine HUMMER Accessories and aftermarket components.

Starting with a new H3T Alpha, engineers added nearly 70 horsepower to its 5.3L V-8 via components available in the aftermarket. They include LS2 cylinder heads, a higher-lift camshaft and supporting components. Also enhancing performance is a custom, 3.5-inch exhaust system.

Taking a note from playbook of the HUMMER stock-class race program, the H3T rides on 35-inch-tall BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A tires mounted on HUMMER Accessory 20-inch wheels. The concept also uses racing-proven stock and aftermarket suspension components, including Light Racing JounceShocks and 2-inch-diameter Rod Hall Racing piggyback reservoir-type performance shocks. The modified suspension improves the H3T's inherent off-road capability for traversing all forms of terrain.

To enhance the storage flexibility of the H3T's 5-foot bed and standard bed-rail system, the Sportsman includes right- and left- side lockable storage boxes from HUMMER Genuine Accessories, perfect for securing valuable hunting and fishing gear.

Additionally, the Wildrye Matte custom paint is highlighted by functional HUMMER accessories, including grille-mounted and custom low-profile front- and rear-facing roof-rail mounted Delta off-road lamps, a body-color upper grille and a matte finish fuel door.

A Predator Motorsports H3 winch mount system with a Warn XD9000 winch and Viking Off-Road synthetic winchline and Expert Recovery Kit provide the necessary recovery tools for any situation. On the interior, added HUMMER Genuine Accessories all-weather floor mats and seat covers protect the crew cab's interior from elements.

2010 SALEEN S281 Official Revealed

At the SEMA show in Las Vegas, Saleen Performance Vehicles premiered its latest, ultimate, 2010-based Mustang, named – 2010 SALEEN S281. The new pony car conversion excels with its premium design level and high performance.

“For more than 25 years the Saleen name has stood for excellence in design, engineering, and driving dynamics,” said Mike Shields, CEO of Saleen Performance Vehicles. “The new S281 is an excellent example of what those words mean when we craft concepts into real cars. Our team has done a terrific job; I’m proud of them and proud to be offering this car to our customers.”

The refined SALEEN S281’s exterior features redesigned grille and front fascia, extended rear fascia and trunk lid with a simple, elegant, integrated wing. The striking vision is further strengthened by the unique, 20-inch, 7-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero Rosso high-performance tires, and Saleen S281 Supercharged fender badging.

Fitted with a Saleen Series VI.5 twin-screw supercharger and dual-stage intercooler, the 2010 S281’s 4.6-liter V8 engine is capable to produce 485 hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque transferred to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential with 3.73:1 final drive ratio.

Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with a Saleen Racecraft suspension system, which includes single-rate front and rear springs; nitrogen-pressurized front struts and rear; specially tuned front sway bar.

Ferrari has announced the amount for which the unique Ferrari 599 China has been auctioned. The unique Ferrari 599 China was won tonight by an anonymous client from Shanghai at the final price of about 1.2 million euro (including taxes). The auction for the Ferrari 599 China was held at the Red Gate Gallery in Beijing and was organized by the Prancing Horse.

Lu Hao, the first Chinese artist to work with Ferrari, created this special model decorated with Song Dynasty Ge Kiln pottery patterns.

The funds raised by this auction will go to outstanding students and young teachers of Tsinghua University’s Department of Automotive Engineering to study at Italy’s Politecnico di Milano University and internship at Ferrari’s headquarters.
